Barrel Market
Trend Update
The short version
Asking prices for aged American whiskey barrels went flat this fall, and the pressure to cut is still down, not up. Four things show it:
- Prices held. Of 136 producer, mash bill and age groups listed on the public marketplaces on both Sep 4 and Oct 15, 96 did not move, 26 fell and 14 rose.
- The clearance overhang is shrinking. Clearance-priced barrel listings fell from 998 to 540, but their typical price stayed at $917.
- Brokers are cutting, not raising. A national broker's September list changed 8 of 52 matching lots from its April list. All 8 were cuts, of 9% to 52%.
- Young whiskey is where the glut is. Two- to four-year MGP bourbon sits near $720 to $770 a barrel whatever its age. Price only steps up at five years.
Prices held on the marketplaces, Sep 4 to Oct 15
The typical group moved 0%. We compared the median asking price of every producer, mash bill and age group with at least three published listings on both dates across the public barrel marketplaces.
Groups whose median asking price moved more than 2% in either direction count as up or down.
The biggest single moves rest on three or four listings each, so they read as listing turnover, not a market shift. Fewer barrels are listed overall: usable listings on the largest marketplace fell from 2,695 to 1,718. We can't tell from the listings whether those barrels sold or were withdrawn.
The clearance overhang is shrinking
Clearance-priced marketplace lots are selling down, but their price is not moving. These are large lots of Kentucky and Texas bourbon listed under $1,100 a barrel with 10 or more barrels each.
Typical clearance price per barrel: $917 on both dates.
Bardstown-distilled resale lots sit at the low end too: about 600 barrels from 2021 and 2022 fills, listed at $605 to $725 with 10- to 200-barrel minimums. These are holders reselling contract-distilled whiskey, not the distillery's own pricing. They aren't moving either: the same lots were listed at the same prices and quantities on Sep 4, and four of the five have been up since May 2025.
Until these lots clear, they set the price a buyer can get for the same or similar juice this year. They don't set what a barrel is worth to hold.
Brokers are cutting, not raising
A national broker's September 15 list raised no prices from its April 16 list. Matching by producer, mash bill and fill year, 52 lots appear on both. 44 are unchanged, and these 8 were cut:
| Producer | Mash bill | Fill year | April | September | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wilderness Trail | 64/24/12 wheated | 2020 | $2,900 | $1,400 | −52% |
| Wilderness Trail | 64/24/12 wheated | 2021 | $2,500 | $1,300 | −48% |
| Wilderness Trail | 64/24/12 wheated | 2022 | $2,325 | $1,520 | −35% |
| Jim Beam | 78/13/9 | 2018 | $2,800 | $2,300 | −18% |
| MGP | 75/21/4 | 2019 | $2,875 | $2,450 | −15% |
| Green River | 70/21/9 | 2022 | $863 | $775 | −10% |
| Green River | 70/21/9 | 2023 | $800 | $725 | −9% |
| MGP | 75/21/4 | 2021 | $1,700 | $1,550 | −9% |
Prices are medians where a lot appears more than once on a list. The September list also adds new 2026 MGP fills and four years of Bardstown 60/26/10/4.
Young whiskey is where the glut is
Two-, three- and four-year MGP bourbon all list at $721 to $772 a barrel. The market pays nothing extra for those years. Price only steps up at five, to about $1,250, and sits between about $1,850 and $2,730 from nine years on.
Median asking price per barrel by age. Published marketplace listings and broker list, Oct 15, 2026; clearance lots excluded.
Other producers show the same pattern. The broker list prices Bardstown's 72/18/5/5 four-grain and its 90/5/5 rye at a flat $1,200 for fills from 2020 to 2023; 2024 fills are $1,100 to $1,200.
What it means
For sellers: price to the clearance lots this year, and hold what you don't need to sell. A barrel listed well above a same-juice clearance lot sits. Five-plus-year stock still earns its step up, so time works for barrels that can wait.
For buyers: this is a buyer's window for young bourbon, and it narrows as the clearance lots sell down. Clearance lots come with 10- to 50-barrel minimums and as-is terms. Barrel Lab's own closed sales this month settled above those asks: buyers still pay for a specific barrel, a small quantity and a clean transfer.
For Barrel Lab's VRV™: this month's revision moved two producers and left the rest alone. Bardstown Bourbon Company and Green River lots fell about a quarter. MGP, Kentucky Artisan, Texas, Middle West, Wilderness Trail and the other producers were essentially unchanged; across all 506 lots on the board, the typical lot did not move. The drop reflects increased velocity of quantity sales at lot-discount prices. More Bardstown and Green River whiskey has reached the market: since early September, holders have listed about 4,400 more barrels of Bardstown whiskey on the public marketplaces at a typical $849 a barrel, and the broker list cut Green River 9% to 10%. VRV is revised every month against the latest marketplace and broker comps. Individual clearance listings are counted separately, because they tell you what one seller will take now, not what a barrel is worth to hold.

- Chevalier Casks: logged-in capture, Oct 15, 2026. Nine lots carried both a price and a named producer.
- A national broker's emailed barrel price lists dated April 16 and September 15, 2026. Only 53-gallon barrels with a named distiller are used.
- Barrel Lab VRV™ calculated on all 506 active lots before and after the October revision.
Method: listings are grouped by producer, mash bill and whole years of age. Each group's price is the median after dropping listings below 45% or above 220% of the raw median. Whole-lot offers (minimum 50 barrels or more) are set aside where smaller lots exist. Clearance lots are counted separately and kept out of valuations.
