The Dawn of
a New Day

After a decade of overproduction, the American whiskey market is being told a supply story. We think it’s an information story. Here is what we published this morning, what it opens up, and eight lots worth a look.

Announced this morning

As the whiskey surplus peaks, a platform arrives to price it — and move it

Kentucky reported a record 16.1 million barrels of bourbon aging in bonded warehouses — more than three times the inventory that defined the glut of the 1980s — against a tax-assessed value above $10 billion.

The barrels exist. The demand for finished whiskey exists. What doesn’t exist is a reliable way to price a barrel, verify what’s in it, and turn it into a product on a shelf.

“A broker quotes a price, a buyer has no way to test it, and a seller has no idea whether he just left forty percent on the table,” said Michael Shoer, Managing Partner of Victory Spirits Development. “That’s not a market. That’s a rumor with a wire transfer attached.”

What’s a Barrel Worth, Anyway?

Here is how a barrel of aging whiskey changes hands. A broker hears that a distillery has surplus inventory. He calls a few buyers he knows. A number gets named. That is the entire price discovery mechanism for an asset class worth well over ten billion dollars in Kentucky alone. The industry has largely read this as oversupply. It is worth considering a different reading…
